Biliary duct surgery is a procedure to remove blockages in the biliary ducts. These ducts are responsible for carrying bile from the liver to the small intestine. Blockages in the biliary ducts can lead to a build-up of bile in the liver, which can damage the liver cells.

Biliary duct surgery is usually performed as a laparoscopic procedure, which means that the surgeon makes a few small incisions in the abdomen and inserts a thin, lighted tube with a camera attached. This allows the surgeon to see inside the abdomen and remove the blockage without making a large incision.

In some cases, the blockage may be too large to be removed with a laparoscopic procedure. In these cases, the surgeon may need to make a larger incision and remove the blockage directly.

After the blockage is removed, the surgeon will close the incisions with stitches or staples. The recovery time for biliary duct surgery is usually short, and most people can go home the same day or the day after the procedure.

If you have a blockage in your biliary ducts, talk to your doctor about whether biliary duct surgery is right for you.
